We chose English4Today as the winner of the "TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award" because we found their approach to learning English online very compelling, and their explanations of complex English grammar issues to be very helpful. In fact, English4Today has an amazing way of presenting it through videos, audios, and articles.
In addition to offering tutoring services, English4Today is chock full of lessons that you can read, listen to, or watch. And you can access them by categories or search by theme.
Students have a wide variety of course types to choose from including several options of English for special purposes like medical English and creative writing. In addition, they prepare their students for the business and university English exams.
There were lots of quick and easy-to-find helping pages that were clearly marked and organized. Students can find the answers to their grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary questions.
Standout Features:
- Rich website – The English4Today website offers tons of interesting links, including novel translation services, thesauri, computerized writing assistants, games, tests, etc.
- Downloadable e-books and software – In addition to the social media, English4Today offers e-books on grammar, writing, and vocabulary.
- Links to gadgets and widgets – You can put these reference materials right on your desktop so you can learn English any time you are on your computer.
- Family learning opportunities – Make learning English a family activity. They have games and help for the children with their school work.
- Lots of writing courses – English4Today offers courses in creative writing, writing for the Business world and academic writing.
- Questions – Reading through the Top Grammar Questions section of English4Today is very interesting. Students pose difficult English language questions and teachers reply. Find out the difference between could and would, may and might, and so much and so many.
- Crossword games online – The website is a lot of fun. In fact, we spent a lot of time playing crossword. Simply read an article with a particular theme and then do the crossword puzzle with the new vocabulary you learned. You don’t even have to register to play, so check it out.
- List of English language schools – They had a comprehensive list of English schools all around the world. You’ll find plenty to choose from in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the U.S.
- Quotes – This was a truly novel component of the English4Today website. When English students are trying to write, quite often they can’t find the word they want. (This happens to everybody, by the way.) Students can sign up to have the “quote-a-day” emailed to them. We looked at a few and they were really good. They quote Mark Twain, Aristotle, Bette Davis, Carl Jung, and that’s only a few they have listed on their site.
- Videos – If you’re tired of reading all of your English lessons, English4Today is the place to go. They have tons of grammar lessons available via video; just sit and learn. But that’s not all; they also have study guides and other materials that accompany the videos to reiterate concepts and complement the lessons.
- Power lessons – If you have a unique need such as a company presentation or you need to negotiate with some of your clients, or possibly you need to write a report for work, you can schedule time with the CEO of English4Today. He will work with you one-on-one regarding your special needs.
- Book of the month – Although English4Today doesn’t feature that much cultural information on their website, part of the newsletter is dedicated to interesting novels that are currently popular. And there is a blog where English4Today instructors explain various aspects of the book and they even point out relevant passages in the book. This commentary is well-written and would be of interest to anyone. We just wish these parts of the website were easier to find, but you really do need to sign up for their newsletter.
Of course not everything was great about the English4Today website. We found it very difficult to find things. There were even a few bad links. We could overlook that, but when we were navigating around, it felt like we were playing hide the navigation. There appear to be several sites all in one big website. We would love to see them resolve this issue so that the gems they have hidden can be seen by all.
